Decluttering 2022: List of Things to Get Rid of to Declutter Your Home & Life

How to Rid Yourself of Clutter in the New Year
Whether or not your New Year’s Resolutions involve organizing your life and purging your house of clutter, it definitely does not hurt to set aside some time to identify areas of your day-to-day that could use a little deep cleaning. Being surrounded by clutter and mess can actually have a negative effect on our overall health and well-being, while cleaning and organizing can improve our mood and give us back a sense of control. However, the thought of figuring out where to even start can be overwhelming but don’t worry -- we have you covered.

When considering the areas of your life that need some decluttering and purging, know that organizing can go beyond your house and personal items. You can also declutter your life with the relationships you put energy into, the social media accounts you follow, or by simply getting through those pesky to-do list items that keep getting put off.

How to Start Decluttering and Purging Your Life
When it comes to getting rid of tangible items, consider making dedicated boxes labeled “donate”, “sell”, and “trash.” As you work through your list of things to get rid of to declutter, you can ask yourself some of the following questions to help determine whether you want to keep the item or figure out what you want to do with it:

  • Does this item bring me joy?
  • Would someone else enjoy having this item?
  • Did I even remember that I had this item in my house?
  • Would I ever buy this item again?
  • Do I use this item on a regular basis?

With these ideas and questions in mind, you can start looking at the different areas of your life that might need some decluttering and purging. Here are a few places to get started:

Clothing That You No Longer Wear
We tend to hold onto clothing longer than we need to because we may think to ourselves “what if I want to wear this someday?” Maybe we just feel guilty for spending money on something and then never wearing it. Whatever the reason may be, it’s important to not hold onto clothing that either no longer fits us or meets our personal style. If items are itchy, pinch, squeeze, are uncomfortable in any way, or just don’t give you confidence anymore, you are allowed to let them go! These clothes end up taking up more space in our closet and drawers that could be utilized for pieces that spark joy, match our personalities, and overall just make us feel good.

The clothes that you get rid of can be donated and given a second life with someone else. You can also consider hosting a clothing swap with friends to help with your decluttering and purging process. Another idea is to host a joint garage sale with your neighbors in Estrella to help you meet your decluttering goals. The community often hosts Community Wide Garage Sale weekends so be sure to keep an eye on the Estrella event page for any upcoming events!

Decluttering and Purging Your Home
If your home is feeling a little disorganized, it may be time to start decluttering the various rooms in your house. The key to this initiative is to go room by room -- be sure to finish one space before moving onto the next! When you start on a new room, completely empty the space by removing items from on top of tables, drawers, bins, hangers, and more. Once all the items are laid out, you can assess each item and determine if it should go into the “donate”, “sell”, or “trash” box.

Spaces in your house to declutter include the bedrooms, living room, kitchen, and garage. However, there are other rooms that might need attention as well such as the entryway and bathrooms. When it comes to decluttering and purging your bathroom, take some time to look over your medications and toss anything that is expired. These expired medicine bottles and pills take up unnecessary space and can also be unsafe to ingest -- it’s best to toss them into the “trash” bin and find nearby options for safe medication disposal.

Relationships That No Longer Serve You
One important aspect of decluttering and purging your life includes taking a deeper look at the relationships you spend a lot of your time and energy on. If you find yourself being the one to constantly reach out and make plans while your friend puts in little to no effort to reciprocate, it may be time to step back. Now, this doesn’t mean you need to break up with that individual, it just means you are allowing yourself to prioritize and pour into others that positively impact your life, bringing you joy and fulfillment.

By taking a step back from one-sided relationships, you open yourself up to the possibility of new friendships and connections -- such as that Estrella neighbor that you’ve been meaning to take on a coffee date at Café Bebida in Lucero!

Social Media Accounts or Apps That Negatively Impact You

Do you find yourself feeling drained after looking at specific accounts or scrolling through certain social media platforms? It may be time to add social media to your list of things to get rid of to declutter. This could entail purging through the list of accounts you follow and either unfollowing or muting accounts that do not bring you joy.

However, if the actual social media platform itself is what is causing you to feel drained -- you might benefit from taking a break from that app, either temporarily or permanently. Taking some time away from that social media platform can open up doors to other activities that may feel more fulfilling such as painting, reading, writing, bike riding, hiking, and more.

If you need some ideas of fun activities that do not include scrolling through a feed, you can check out Estrella’s Yacht Club, our award-winning golf course, or our more than 50 miles of paths and trails
