Feng Shui Decorating Tips for Your Home

What if you could improve your mood by simply rearranging your home? The ancient Chinese philosophy of feng shui reveals how creating a balanced living environment may be the key we’ve been searching for. From clearing the clutter to hiding the electronics, here are a few decorating tips on how to feng shui your way into a balanced home.

Clear the Clutter

Clutter isn’t only visually unappealing, it also increases stress. Begin your feng shui journey by giving your place a good deep clean, throwing out old mail and magazines, discarding or storing orphaned charger cords and electronic cables, and tidying up any misplaced items. Take some advice from Marie Kondo and purge anything in your space that doesn’t spark joy. If you’re having trouble removing past favorites, try visualizing how you want your room to look before de-cluttering. Remember, not every space needs to be filled, so it’s completely acceptable to get rid of that beloved couch you’ve had since college. Chose Colors Wisely

Color can deeply impact your mood and overall well-being, so it’s best to choose tones that promote positive energy and reflect your personality. In feng shui, different colors give off various messages and feelings. While greens and blues tend to inspire healing, growth, and new beginnings, yellow can inspire cheer and a sense of stability. Check out this guide to feng shui colors to find which best suits your space. The great thing about color is that it is easily changeable. Whether it’s a new coat of paint, a colorful rug, piece of artwork, or a couple of throw pillows, color inspiration can come from anywhere and completely change your room’s energy.

Clean Your Air

A deep breath of fresh air is good for the soul. Lighten up your home by keeping the windows open during nice weather, and while we’re thinking about it, giving them a good clean. Wash your windows with natural cleaning supplies to help reduce the amount of toxins in the air. Instead of buying strong artificial scented candles, opt for essential oils to clear any negative energies out of your space and diffuse a calming scent into the room. Use a few house plants or fresh flowers as natural purifiers, and to add some lively color into the room.

Change Up Your Electronics

The placement of your electronics can greatly impact your home’s feng shui. In general, you should avoid having a TV in your bedroom. This will help create a relaxing space that promotes a good night’s rest, not entertainment. If you can’t remove the TV, try unplugging it. This will definitely help keep you from bingeing that new Netflix series all night long. As far as other parts of your home, store your electronics behind closed cabinet doors when they’re not in use. Hide any visible wires to keep your pathways clear and reduce unnecessary clutter.

Furniture Placement

Arrange your furniture in a way that promotes a positive flow. Potentially daunting at first, all it takes is ensuring large pieces don’t block major doorways or make the area feel too crowded. Using furniture that is proportionate to the space will also help achieve optimal balance. Coffee tables, desks, or tables with rounded edges promote positive chi and feel more subtle than sharp or jagged edges. When it comes to your bedroom, leaving open space on either side of your bed is a great way to find positive flow and achieve true feng shui.
