At-Home Boredom Busters for Adults
It’s not just the kids that can go a bit stir crazy at home, adults sometimes also need spice up their daily routine. From learning a new language to hosting a virtual happy hour, here are a few at-home boredom busters for the grownups.
Start a Virtual Book Club
More downtime at home means finally being able to dive into a good book. Encourage friends and family to join by creating a virtual book club. Have all members contribute a couple suggestions and create a list of the top picks. Use Facebook Groups, or your preferred networking site, to post meeting times, reading schedules, and discussion topics, as well as to keep members up to date on any changes. Video-chatting applications like Zoom, Facetime, or Skype are all great tools for hosting your virtual gatherings. Have all members bring one question or talking point to each meeting to prompt discussion.
Explore World-Class Museums and National Parks
Explore the world’s greatest museums, monuments, and national parks all from the comfort of your couch. From cultural hotspots like the Van Gough Museum and Guggenheim, to classic tourist destinations like the Eiffel Tower and Sydney Opera House, Google Arts & Culture allows viewers to tour hundreds of iconic exhibits from across the globe. History buffs can take self-guided, room-by-room tours of the Smithsonian for some extra educational fun. The National Parks Service offers multiple virtual tours of top outdoor attractions including Yellowstone National Park, Mammoth Hot Springs, and Norris Geyser Basin to keep nature enthusiasts entertained.
Download popular workout apps such as FitOn, Nike Training Club, or FitBit Coach for a wide variety of quick and effective at-home workouts guaranteed to keep you motivated. A number of gyms, studios, and fitness companies including Peloton, CorePower Yoga, Planet Fitness, and Orangetheory Fitness offer free online classes to keep you moving and grooving in your living room, while ensuring you stay connected with your fellow fitness junkies. YouTube also has multiple fitness channels filled with fun, at-home workouts including Zumba and dance fitness. Taking a walk, jog, or bike ride through Estrella’s beautiful trails is always a great option for getting some much-needed fresh air and exercise.
Learn a New Language
Whether you’re brushing up from your college days or choosing something new, learning a foreign language is a fun and worthwhile at-home activity. Download Duolingo for free, personable lessons tailored to your learning style or check out BBC for additional courses, videos, and activities. You can even video chat with family and friends and learn together for some additional fun. If language isn’t your thing, check out Coursera or edX for more than 4,000 free courses from major universities covering all subjects and studies.
Host a Virtual Happy Hour
Just because you’re stuck at home doesn’t mean cocktail hour is cancelled. Host a virtual happy hour with your crew via Facetime, Skype, or Zoom. Determine a time to meet and encourage everyone to have a cocktail, or mocktail, in hand and chat about the day’s activities. There are a variety of tasty cocktails like pomegranate margaritas or raspberry rosé sangria that only require a few ingredients and can easily be made at home. Make the party even more memorable by choosing a theme such as ‘tropical’ or ‘rock n’ roll’ and encourage everyone to dress accordingly!
