Spotlight: Arizona’s Sports Teams
Arizona is lucky to be home to a variety of professional sports teams, all located right here in the greater Phoenix area. Estrella residents can see their favorite athletes and teams battle it out on the field, rink, or court! Check out additional information about our local teams and how you can be part of the game-day experience.
Estrella residents don’t have to travel far from home to watch the Arizona Cardinals take the field. The NFL team plays at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, less than 20 miles from Estrella. The stadium holds more than 63,000 fans and is also home to the annual Fiesta Bowl that takes place in January. Located next to Westgate Entertainment District, football fans can get started early on game day festivities and watch the action unfold at one of the center’s many delicious restaurants.
Also located in the West Valley is our local NHL team, the Arizona Coyotes. The Coyotes play at Gila River Arena, located in Westgate Entertainment District, next to State Farm Stadium. Fans can watch the team play pre-season games starting in September through the regular season end in April, one of the longest seasons in professional sports. Perfect for families, the hockey team hosts a variety of theme nights and giveaways such as Star Wars Night, Happy Howlidays and Howl-o-ween, a trick-or-treating event that takes place on the arena concourse before the game.
If you’re an Arizona baseball fan, you’re in luck. Not only do we get to see the Arizona Diamondbacks play April through September in downtown Phoenix, but we also get to watch them during spring training. The Diamondbacks are a member of the Cactus League, which starts its spring training season in late February. Fans can catch the team play pre-season games at Salt River Fields in Scottsdale before opening day at Chase Field. If you’d rather stay close to home, no sweat! Goodyear Ballpark is located right outside Estrella and is the training facility for the Cleveland Indians and Cincinnati Reds during the spring training season.
The Phoenix Suns, Arizona’s NBA team, play in the heart of downtown Phoenix. The Suns tip off the season every October at Talking Stick Resort Arena and play through April. Fans can enjoy all downtown has to offer before or after a game with a variety of restaurants and shopping in the area. The basketball arena is also located right on the light rail system, making it convenient for fans to travel around the city.
The Talking Stick Resort is also home to the WNBA’s Phoenix Mercury. Ladies’ basketball season begins in May and runs through September, with finals at the beginning of October. The 2014 WNBA Champions, the Mercury features some of the most recognizable women in the sport, including Diana Taurasi and Brittney Griner.
Next time you’re planning a family night out, consider grabbing tickets to see one of our local teams. If sports aren’t your thing, our master-planned community is also close to plenty of local events and beautiful destinations. Check out our Arizona Bucket List places and events blogs for ideas.
