Resident Spotlight: Café Bebida Owner, Deborah Huyer
Estrella is excited to soon welcome Café Bebida to Casa Lucero, which will become our new home information center. Café Bebida will feature espresso drinks, creative beverage infusions, savories and sweets as well as stunning views in its hillside setting. Café Bebida will be locally owned and operated by Estrella resident, Deborah Huyer, who also owns Lakeside Grill and Splash Café in Starpointe Residents Club. Deborah shared with us insights on Café Bebida, her history in the restaurant business, and why she is so passionate about what she does.
How long have you been working in the restaurant business?
I have been working in the restaurant business for more than 12 years. I completed my formal apprenticeship with a Swiss Chef and went on to be the Sous Chef for the Vail Athletic Club and Denver Petroleum Club. Later, I opened my own restaurant in Seattle, specializing in North West food and wine. When I had my children, I went into business consulting, providing me with a more flexible schedule.
The decision to open Lakeside Grill and Café Bebida was made with my family. My son, Forrest, shares my love of food and received his Bachelor of Science in Restaurant Management from Northern Arizona University and has worked as a manager for Pappadeux’s and Matt’s Big Breakfast. His wife Brenda has worked as a manager and trainer for Cheesecake Factory. We put our many years of experience and skills together to open the two establishments.
What inspired you to start up your own restaurants?
I’m Greek and my husband is German, so we both like good food! We live here in Estrella and got tired of driving down the hill and only finding chain restaurants. When the café space in Starpointe became available, we put together a plan to open Lakeside Grill, reflecting our love of food, high-quality ingredients, and big flavors. Our vision was for Lakeside Grill to bring the community together in a beautiful setting in front of the fireplace or on the patio overlooking the lake.
What are you most excited about with the opening of Café Bebida?
The space at Casa Lucero is really amazing. It’s a wonderful venue for our community to come together and for visitors to come and fall in love with the area and stay. We feel so fortunate to be a part of creating this experience. We are also excited about being stewards of the Sonoran Desert. We are surrounded by miles of the Sonoran Desert, the lushest desert in the world! Even though it is classified as a desert with less than 19 inches of rainfall per year, it is unique in that it is the only desert in the world to have two rainy seasons – which is why it is so diverse, as deserts go. To protect it, we are committed to reducing the number of disposables we use, only use compostable or recyclable disposables, and our team conducts once a month hikes in the area to make sure none of our trash is left behind. I’m really looking forward to going out the door and taking a hike before or after work!
Tell us a little about Café Bebida.
In line with the naming of Casa Lucero, which means “Bright Star,” bebida means “drinks” in Spanish. We wil offer high octane drinks, savories, and sweets. Whether you are riding, hiking, climbing Star Tower, surfing the net, or just relaxing, we want you to fuel your passion with us.
We feature signature blends of coffees, teas, and drinks that are named after our environment such as Star Tower Blend, North Lake Blend, and Desert Blossom.
What is your favorite item on the menu at Café Bebida?
The espresso and the gelato! You can have them together in an Affogato, a vanilla gelato topped with espresso. Yum! Or maybe try the Hazelnut Chocolate Crunch…
What do you hope customers will love most about Café Bebida?
I hope customers will love the fun, creative drinks crafted by our friendly mixologists along with delicious food and snacks, all while relaxing in a beautiful Sonoran environment. Casa Lucero was designed visually and architecturally to blend in and compliment the surrounding area.
What does Café Bebida add to Lucero and the Estrella community?
We hope Café Bebida is the magnet that brings everyone together. A place to go before or after a hike or ride, or Sunday afternoon gelato with the family.
What do you love most about the Estrella community?
The sheer beauty of our surroundings and amenities. Even though I have lived here since 2011, when I drive up the hill, I still feel like I’m going to my very own resort and leaving the problems of the world behind.
Why did you choose Estrella for your restaurants?
We live here and love it. It has brought us together with our neighbors and the community. Whether I’m at Safeway, walking the lake, or hiking a trail, I now run into friends of the restaurant and I feel so much a part of the community.
