How to Throw an Epic Backyard Movie Night

One of our favorite ways to gather friends and family together to enjoy Arizona’s beautiful weather is to host an outdoor movie night. Here are a few things you need to know to throw your first backyard screening in your new Estrella home.

The Set-up
Before you figure out the fun details, you need to nail down the logistics, specifically the movie set-up. The first step is to secure a projector and a really loud speaker, preferably Bluetooth, so you can move it to where it will have the best acoustics. Next, you need to decide where you are going to project the film. If you have a large, blank wall, that’s the simplest solution. If not, there are several other options available.  Next, you need to decide where you are going to project the film. If you have a large, blank wall, that’s the simplest solution. If not, there are several other options available.

Option 1: Hang up a sheet, either on a fence or from a line hung between two trees. As long as it’s not windy, this is a super easy solution.

Option 2: Let out your inner DIY-er and build a portable movie screen. What’s nice about this option is that you don’t have to put any holes in walls or trees, many versions are easy to assemble and it often collapses small for storage.

The Seating
Now that the logistics are handled, use items you already have in your home to easily set up a fun, comfortable movie-watching area. Set out your lawn chairs, camping chairs, blankets and cushions and let everyone pick their favorite spot.

While it’s quaint to sit on the ground for a little while to watch a movie, it can get uncomfortable really quick for adults. Have air mattresses? This is a great time to put them to good use! They’re especially handy if you have ones of varying heights, to produce a stadium effect.

Like to get creative? Use a kiddie pool as a sitting area! It gives you a built-in head and footrest. Fill it to the brim with blankets and pillows and dive in for movie night.

The Food
As with most events, the refreshments can make or break the success of the night. Consider taking the cinema classic of popcorn and spicing it up with different flavors, making a popcorn bar.

Or take advantage of the outdoors and light the fire pit for s’mores. Add some fun variations on the traditional s’more by using Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, Andes mints or Caramello bars instead of Hershey’s bars. Also great for roasting over a fire pit are gummy candies like Starbursts or gummy bears, which melt into ooey-gooey goodness.

If you have kiddos (or just like to keep things organized), get shower caddies from the dollar store and fill them up with fun goodies like soda, bags of popcorn, and candy. This can prevent fights of “she got more candy than me!” and makes everyone feel special.

The Movie
And now, for the best part – choosing the movie itself! There are SO many options to choose from. We recommend narrowing it down first by the ages and temperaments of those in attendance. Generally speaking, though, you can’t go wrong with these classics:
• Ghostbusters
• The Goonies
• Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade
• Jurassic Park
• Back to the Future

Now, sit back, relax and enjoy your outdoor movie night!
