Get to Know your First Responders - Firefighter Tim Jones
Estrella is home to so many exceptional first responders who help keep our neighborhoods safe, including members of the Goodyear Fire Department. As a certified "all-hazard" response agency, members are trained, equipped, and dedicated to providing outstanding medical services, fire, hazardous materials services, community education, emergency management, and assisting with any other need that our community may have.
Recently we picked the brain of Goodyear firefighter Tim Jones in an effort to get to know some of our local first responders.
Name: Tim Jones
Rank: Firefighter, paramedic, and hazmat tech with the Goodyear fire department.
How long have you been a firefighter officer? I have worked as a firefighter in Goodyear since 2005 and currently my home station is Fire Station 182 on Estrella Parkway. As you may know, our schedule is 48 hours on shift and then 96 hours off shift, not including extra overtime shifts. So, I spend at least 1/3 of my life at the fire station. It is literally a second home.
What made you want to be a firefighter? I knew I first wanted to be a firefighter when I was seven years old. I was in the Cub Scouts and one day our den mother took us to a fire station. I remember the firefighters had us put on their boots and helmets and let us spray some water. I also remember a firefighter who had a huge mustache telling us about how they put out fires and helped people. I thought he was the coolest person ever and knew immediately I wanted to be like him when I grew up.
What is your favorite thing about being a firefighter? There are so many great things about my job and being a firefighter for the city of Goodyear, but what I love the most is the feeling I get when we help someone on their worst day, and truly make a difference in their life.
What is one thing you would want Estrella residents to know? Being a firefighter here in Estrella is unique in that it is still somewhat a smaller community, and we get to interact with the public and really be involved. If we are out training, exercising or even at Safeway shopping, I really like that the residents say hello to us, welcome us and are very friendly. It's also really nice when one of the residents stops by the station to thank us for taking care of them or their family member on a recent 911 call. Sometimes they even bring brownies or cookies…another reason I love being at Fire Station 182.
What do you love most about Goodyear?
I have worked at every station in Goodyear, but I am happy to call 182 my home. I feel so blessed that I am able to be a firefighter, and I am grateful that I get to do it in such a great community.
The department works under the mantra of “Integrity, Unity, Excellence” and we couldn’t think of a better way to describe the brave men and woman who serve on the Goodyear Fire Department.
