Fun Art Project Brings Community Together

To show support for Estrella’s excelling schools, Newland Communities organized and helped fund a calendar project featuring the artwork of local students. The calendars were sold for $5 each during the holidays with 100% of the profits benefiting Estrella’s three amazing schools – Estrella Mountain Elementary, Westar Elementary and Estrella Foothills High School.


Every elementary student created artwork during class with the theme of “What I Love about Estrella.”  The high school students voluntarily submitted artwork created on their own time. Students illustrated amenities such as Star Tower, the hiking trails, lakes and water slides as what they love most about their community.


Each school had four pages dedicated to showcasing approximately 20 chosen works of art. The best four pieces from each school, chosen by a committee of teachers, staff and each school’s principal, are featured as a larger image on each page. Next, community voting to choose the calendar’s cover took place at Starpointe Residents Club during October. Residents were asked to vote for their favorite piece which would grace the cover of the calendar as well as “The Best Interpretation of Theme”, “The Best Use of Color” and others.


Each school was given 500 calendars to sell as a fundraiser and copies were available at Starpointe for residents to purchase.


Taking the project one step further, the Estrella Information Center then hosted an Artist Reception for the students to showcase their artwork and honor their achievements. Community organizations including the Arts of Estrella as well as the West Valley Arts Council participated in the reception.  Embracing arts and education has always been important to the residents of Estrella and it was evident by the turnout of residents at the reception.
