On October 2-6, 2014, the Estrella community will have the honor of hosting “The Moving Wall,” a half-sized traveling replica of the Washington D.C. Vietnam Veterans Memorial. The monument was created by three Vietnam veterans, John Devitt, Gerry Haver and Norris Shears, as a way to share the powerful experience of visiting the memorial with those who may never have a chance to travel to Washington D.C. The Moving Wall first went on display in 1984 in Tyler, Texas and has been traveling around the country for the past 30 years. Since its inception, The Wall has been displayed in more than 1,300 communities.
The Moving Wall is specifically designed to honor the 2.7 million men and women who served in the U.S. Military in Vietnam. As of January 2014, The Wall contains approximately 58,286 names - 1,300 of those are still unaccounted for prisoners of war (POWs) and missing in action (MIA). A series of ceremonies will be held, including a candlelight vigil on October 4 in memory of these servicemen and women.
Standing six-feet tall and 252-feet long, The Wall’s memorial site will encompass approximately half an acre of land just to the west of Starpointe Residents Club. Site preparation will begin this summer with construction of the base platform starting in September. Opening ceremonies for the memorial will be held on the morning of October 3 and The Wall will be open to the public 24 hours a day throughout its time in Estrella, concluding with a closing ceremony on October 6. Volunteers will be stationed at The Wall from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily and will have a directory to assist guests in finding the names of loved ones.
It is expected that tens of thousands of people will visit The Moving Wall in Estrella during its four day stay in the community. If you are interested in being a Moving Wall volunteer, please contact Eric Holmgren at EHolmgren@ccmcnet.com or 623-386-1949. More information and a full schedule of events will be shared later this summer, so look for special details about this extraordinary event.
