Winter and spring in Arizona are a great time for sports, and the Valley of the Sun plays host to everything from the Phoenix Open and Spring Training, to NASCAR and the NBA and NHL. Details on a few of the exciting sporting events are below.
This time of year event calendars are full of 5ks, 10ks, family fun runs, charity walks and large races like the 11th Annual P.F. Chang’s Rock ‘n’ Roll Arizona Marathon and ½ Marathon. Held on Sunday, January 19, the course starts in Downtown Phoenix and runs through Tempe and Scottsdale with live bands playing at every mile.
An annual favorite, the Waste Management Phoenix Open, will be held January 27 – February 2 at TPC Scottsdale. Practice rounds, the first Pro-Am, and special events begin on January 27 with round one of The Open teeing off at 7:30am on January 30. Entertainment this year will feature performances by country star Jake Owen.
It wouldn’t be spring in Arizona without the start of Cactus League Spring Training. Goodyear Ballpark, located just down the hill from Estrella, is home to the Cleveland Indians and Cincinnati Reds. Spring training has been an Arizona tradition since 1947 and currently 15 teams train in the Phoenix metropolitan area. Games start in late February.
Phoenix International Raceway is located only 10 miles from the Estrella community and will host several events this season, including the NASCAR Mexico Toyota Series 120 on February 28, Nationwide Series 200 on March 1 and Sprint Cup 500 on March 2.
Phoenix Suns basketball and Phoenix Coyotes hockey regular season games also run through the month of April—and hopefully into playoffs!
